2021 WM winning duo show

Reflections

Read about the story of Reflections, an experimental trail into aufguss-championships, that turned out to be pretty magical.

Origin of the show

This aufguss creation is a beautiful reminder that sometimes, less truly is more. It’s not about simplifying aufguss, it’s about creating a magical theme and tells a story without words. “Reflections” was inspired by a unique challenge from Hans Dolman (former owner of Thermen Resorts): create a show that speaks for itself, needing no introduction, like in the last years in championships, to try out this new rule.

At the core of “Reflections” started because me and Rianne look so alike that people often mix us up, by colleagues and guests. The spark for this idea came from our love of dressing alike during sessions and the natural harmony of our movements. When we pitched this concept to our superiors, their enthusiasm was contagious, and they encouraged us to bring it to life on the stage of the Netherlands championship. (VNSWB – NK aufguss)

Storyline

“Reflections” welcomes guests into an magical, shiny mirroring world. For decoration we had vases with a shiny reflection outlook, mirrors placed on the sauna’s stove and a big see-through mirror on the stage.

At one key moment, as I lifted the small hidden mirror, a light behind me illuminated a curtain, concealing a larger mirror. The twist? The mirror revealed no reflection of me, there was no reflection yet. Then, with a dramatic reveal, my reflection (Rianne) appeared, leaving guests surprised. (see the middle top picture).

In the first round of “Reflections,” we split the cabin as if standing on either side of a mirror’s edge, creating an illusion of symmetry and connection (synchronized waving was essential). Then, in the second round, we discover that on the other side of the mirror is not really a reflection but a real person looking exactly the same. So they challenge each other, can the other really do everything I can? They show that they want to be different from each other by putting on different tops, one red and the other a blue one.

In the final round, we brought everything together, moving in sync again, but still showing our own unique styles. As the mirror lit up one last time, I disappeared… and only my reflection (Rianne) remained, the only thing left behind the mirror is the blue vest from round two. Guests were left wondering: Wait… was that real, or just an illusion?

“Reflections” showed us how touching a beautiful connection between the aufguss-masters, story and the audience can be.
